Black hole...

What I have learned.

1.  I am far from perfect.

2.  I will forever be a work in progress, and I am good with that realization.

3.  Mistakes aren't always a bad thing.  Sometimes you can learn the most from those errors in judgement and non-perfect happenings life throws      your way.

4.  I'm pretty sure I will be done with life, when I am done learning.

5.  I'm not in any rush for either.  So keep pitching life lessons my way God.

"Emerging from a Black Hole"
Bryn Athyn, PA

Mistakes are okay.  Making the same ones over and over again?  Not so much.  To keep falling into that all too familiar black hole.  Because when that happens, it means the onus is totally on you.  It isn't a mistake anymore, it's morphed into a choice.  You haven't learned anything.  You might actually be a bit dense to keep repeating the pattern.  Go straight to the blackboard and write "I am a moron" fifty times, then go back to your desk and put your head down on your Life is Unfair textbook.

What I have recently learned is that some "friendships" are like this.  They feel like a black hole of negativity.  They swallow up any positive energy being thrown their way, and suck you right in. I'm old enough, and smart enough, to realize life is too short for these black holes.  And quite honestly, calling them a "friendship" is a misnomer.  When it comes right down to it, you can only say "Help I've fallen and I can't get up" so many times before the responsibility shifts totally to you and your responsibility for putting yourself in that situation.  Recently I have been telling myself "Back away from the black hole dummy".  From my mistakes I have learned that there are some who just will never give back and who are quite comfortable living in that black hole of negativity.  Not only do they like it there, they want people to keep them company.  Personally, I like lighter and brighter digs to kick back in.  Darkness has it's purpose, it helps us to truly appreciate the light.  But given the choice, I'm gonna choose light every single time.

Most living organisms will naturally head towards the light to survive.  Black holes aren't the natural habitat for anything other than massive stars that have run out of fuel.  They've hit "empty" on their energy gauge, both literally and figuratively.  My mistake has been believing it's okay to put up with a relationship that isn't symbiotic and fueled by negativity BECAUSE you consider the person a friend.  But what I've learned from that mistake is a REAL friend would never consider asking you to share a black hole with them because it isn't conducive to a healthy survival.   Sometimes...you need to break free and head towards your own light.  Escape the black hole before you are totally sucked in.  Learn from your mistake.  Thrive.

Still a work in progress.  Still learning.  Still good with that realization.

Memories, Dreams, Reflections, aka....

...I have a LONG way to go baby

Ashley, over at Ramblings and Photos, has a new challenge for us this week.  Instead of Scavenger Hunt Sunday (which I am REALLY missing!) today she is hosting a challenge called "Memories, Dreams, Reflections".    Honestly, I am having a hard time remembering my kids' names these days without having to reflect on a year's worth of photos!  But, I'm taking on the challenge.

We are asked to look back at the photos we took in 2011 and find the perfect photo(s) to fit into each of her 25 categories. FYI, I'm skipping some categories.  This has been a very interesting exercise tho.   I've realized while walking down memory lane, dreaming and reflecting that I have LOTS to learn and a LONG way to go baby.  What I "thought" were pretty decent photos at the time, I'm finding I am not too happy with upon reflection.  But it's all good, you have to start somewhere, right?!?
SEE?????  <<<<<  Glass Half FULL Gal in progress!

1.  Me...and what I'm most proud of.

Yep, this is Moi so it qualifies.  I have to say, it's a pretty good representation....Dork! But it DOES bring something to mind.  Hey MOM...remember when you told me my legs would fill out when I got older?  FYI,  I was talking about my calves NOT my thighs!  As for what I am most proud of in 2011...that I started taking myself less seriously and lightened up.

2.  I Love You

3.  Still  Laughing

Thank you Mr. Phillies phan with no phasion sense!  You've given me a reason to look back on this disappointing baseball season for the Phillie phaithful and phind something to laph about.   Seriously, what NOT to wear if you are a boy over the age of 10!

4.  Winter Wonderland

Well who would have thought I'd have to go back to my October photos to find a winter wonderland.  It is now January 1st and STILL no snow.

5.  Birthday

Okay, THIS is a photo I like.  Thing #3's 14th b-day sleepover.  Teen-aged girls...ya gotta love them
OR.......(wait a minute..........................still thinking).

6.  Friends

I lost a friend to lung cancer right before the holidays this year.  Our group from high school has a joke that "The Angel Wears an Eye Patch" is OUR code phrase for passageway into the "over 50" club.  It always cracks us up, we are obviously easily amused.  I guess you had to be there AND be drinking the vino to appreciate the humor. Now we truly do have one of our own Angels (altho I doubt she's wearing an eye patch). One of my friends made up these little ornaments for each of us this past Christmas in honor of Lori and our "saying".   I think of Lori who is not with us anymore, and my amazingly kind and funny friends, who I am blessed to still have around me, whenever I see my "Angel with an eyepatch" sitting on my kitchen window sill.

7.  I Was Inspired...

By simplicity,

...and light.

8.  Spring Fever

No question, for MOI it's baseball opening day when hope "springs" eternal and I get Phillies Phever.

9.  Summer Days

EVERY day is a summer day for Homer (Dog #1)....as long as he can find a sun spot to catch some rays in.

10.  A Day in My Life

Need I say more?

11.  All Smiles

TECHNICALLY, I shouldn't include this photo.  It is from Thanksgiving 2010 (1 month outside of the time parameter) AND I didn't take it myself...altho I gave LOTS of "verbal" direction  (thank goodness Thing #2's boyfriend was with us for that duty). BUT, it makes me smile.  This is the last photo taken of my entire family together.  I will treasure it always.  For years we had all gone our separate ways for our Thanksgiving holiday.  But the hand of fate intervened in 2010 and put the thought in our heads we should "do this".  Dad had started showing signs of Alzheimers and it made us all realize how precious both family and time is.   I thank God he sent us a sign.

12.  Autumn  Harvest

Interesting the patterns you see when you look back on what intrigues you to take a photo.  Obviously I like couples walking amongst autumn foliage.

13.  I Miss You

I miss my dad's strong hands and the knowledge that he will always take care of me. It's been a very tough year, he is still with us physically, albeit in a long-term care facility.  Now it is our turn to take care of him.

14.  Dress Up

(before)

(after)

The beautiful Hedwig Hagenmayer,  my great-grandfather's sister.  I took on a project this year of organizing and "dressing up" some archival family photographs.  And in the process, fell in love with Hedwig.  Now THAT is a woman who knows how to dress up!

15.  Beautiful

Okay, the noises that come out of Thing #3's flute haven't ALWAYS been so beautiful. But they sure are now!

16.  Macro

My whole life I've been goal oriented toward going smaller rather than bigger!  But a macro LENS?  Yep, I could learn to break out of my comfort zone!

17.  Holidays

Picking a favorite?  You've GOT to be kidding! Can't believe I narrowed it down to 2!

18.  Don't Ever Change

Proud to be an American, that will never change.

19.  My Favorite (s)

For the lighting.

Because I held up traffic to take this photo.

20.  Hopes and Dreams

Well, I HOPE you made it to the end of this post because it was a LONG one!  And I dream that there will always be a light at the end of the tunnel.

This was MUCH harder than I had anticipated. Really shouldn't have waited til Saturday afternoon to start organizing and pondering. Actuuuuuuually, that was probably a smart move. I could have KILLED myself with indecision if I had the time to devote to it. Really looking forward to seeing what other's have decided on for their inclusions. Can't wait to start my 2012 photography  journey.

Scavenger Hunt Sunday (#5)...

(**disclaimer:  no you have not entered a time warp.  Altho this is Scavenger Hunt SUNDAY, I'm posting on Saturday. As Thing #2, who is visiting from Cincy, so eloquently stated over a couple glasses of wine last night "Who IS this Irene character?"  I think we will all get the answer to that tonight and tomorrow.  So while I still have electricity, I will take advantage and go ahead and post for Sunday. Now....excuse me while I yet again take advantage of electricity and go blow dry my hair before an onslaught of "bad hair days" are upon me.)

Another Sunday and you know what that means....Hurricane Irene AND Scavenger Hunt Sunday!!!!  It's been an exciting week here in Philly.  First we had an earthquake that rumbled all the way up the eastern seaboard.  Which lead to two observations:  yes my house can actually bend, and Thing #3 didn't think it was so funny when I told her she had to wear a helmet in the house (she REALLY needs to learn to take a joke!).  And NOW??!!??  A hurricane is taking aim at us. I'd say "when it rains it pours" but I don't want to curse my sump pump at the moment.

Hoping my electricity and internet connection hold on long enough so that I can enjoy my normal Sunday morning routine of perusing "Ramblings and Photos"  Scavenger Hunt Sunday with a couple cups of coffee.  This week's prompts were REALLY difficult for me.  My creativity took a serious bruising. I'm looking forward to seeing how other photographers answered the challenges, and I anticipate admonishing my computer screen with "Why didn't 'I' think of that!" quite a few times.

So, without further adieu:

1.  Music

"I really should have studied flute,
Harmonica, or chimes.
A clarinet is nice and light;
A fiddle would be fine.
But I had to take piano,
And my teacher is a brute.
He lives up seven flights of stairs.
(I wish I played the flute.)

-Shel Silverstein

2.  Sun

"People are like stained-glass windows.
They sparkle and shine when the sun is out,
but when the darkness sets in,
their true beauty is revealed
only if there is a light from within."

--Elisabeth Kubler Ross

3.  Old and New

Peek-a-boo!  I love how these "new" daisies are peeking around the corner of the "old" stone pillars.

4.  Cheesy

Seriously, WHO would want to paint their walls in processed "American Cheese"??????  Benjamin Moore must believe there is a certain demographic who wants to have a nice glass of wine and  meat/fruit plate to pair with their walls.

5.  Night Photography

This was a new challenge for me.  My better half didn't even notice I was missing during the 5th inning of the Phillies game when I grabbed my camera and snuck out into the night to experiment.  At first I played around with shadows cast by the moonlight.  But then my Knockout Roses in the front yard caught my eye.

Given that Irene has invited herself to my home and I have no idea how long she is staying...how about a "flooding" or "downed trees" prompt for next week's Scavenger Hunt???  Thanks for stopping by and as always...feel free to leave your thoughts.  And....let's be careful out there!

KISS (Keep it Simple, Stupid!)

"Simplicity"
Bryn Athyn Cathedral, Bryn Athyn, PA

I am a "born-again Philly-delphian".  As with most "born-agains", we are bit more fanatical than those who are life-long members of whatever group to which we belong.  After a 30 year absence from my native Philly, my husband finally saw the light (or perhaps drank the Yuengling) and moved our family back home for me.  Granted, we only lived about 1 1/2 hours west of Philly in Amish country...but I swear on an Apple Dumpling, Fastnacht and all that is holy and fattening...it was a different world there!  Since I have been back home, I have been spending much of my time re-discovering the Philly landscape.  Some is quite familiar...some is quite un-familiar...all is interesting.

One of my recent jaunts was to the Bryn Athyn Cathedral in Bryn Athyn, PA.  I remembered this place from my teen aged years.  We use to hop in a car and go drinking there!  Somehow, the combination of darkness, beer, and teen-aged indifference blinded me to how truly beautiful this place is!  I spent about 3 hours there last week roaming the grounds exploring every nook and cranny with my camera.  I will post more snippets in the weeks to come, but I did want to post one of my favorites now (because I have little patience and I REALLY like this one!).

The older I get, the more I find how much beauty there is in simplicity.  Ah-hem....my shoe closet EXCLUDED of course!  I'm doing my best to adopt the "less is more" mantra, that simplicity should be the goal and unnecessary complexity should be avoided.  This goes for design concepts AND life concepts for me.  Please do not listen to that man behind the curtain, it is only my husband who is protesting that this is NOT the wife he lives with...but I swear I'm REALLY trying!  When I went thru my downloads of photos taken this day, I honestly gasped when I saw this one.  I get lost in it's simplicity.   Leonardo da Vinci stated that "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication".  Maybe it was Leonardo who is responsible for the little black dress....hmmmmm????  That might just be the next "Snapple Fact" you find on that cap!

When you get right down to it, life is a simple thing.  Why do we insist on making it more complicated than it truly is?  And that goes for photography too.  So my advice to everyone is...KISS!

Out of the Blue...

"View From the Back Pew"
Bryn Athyn Cathedral, Bryn Athyn, PA

My friend, and fellow blogger, Becky at The Dusty Cellar is a brilliant photographer.  I knew Becky back in the day when we were both marching band geeks at Upper Moreland High School outside of Philly.  Becky was one up on me tho, at least SHE had talent and could play the flute.  My "talent" was wearing a ridiculous gold lame' outfit with white pleather knee high boots (I feel the need to remind everyone I'm talking 1970's here!!) while waving my arms around on the field under the illusion everyone was paying attention to my band direction.  Fast forward 30-something years to cyberspace and Facebook where Becky and I reconnected.  Some things never change...I had upgraded my white boots and gold lame' to some serious killer shoes and more eco-friendly fabric clothing and still operated under lots of illusions... and Becky still had one up on me with her talent.  This time photography.

Becky's work motivates me to get my butt into gear and start exercising MY photography muscles.  She has an ongoing weekly component in her blog called "Midweek Blues" where she photographically captures "the blues" utilizing ANY interpretation of the word.  She has been kind enough to invite other photographers to participate by linking their "blues" photographs to her blog.  While I might have lead Becky around the field eons ago, I am now a willing follower and taking HER lead.  Thanks Becky!  And seriously folks...please check out The Dusty Cellar at www.thedustycellar.blogspot.com.
