Fa-la-la-la-la, la-freakin'-la...

The week that was...

"Santa's Helper aka/The Better Half"
December 2 - December 9, 2013
Project 52 (50/52)

I love Christmas. But I'm kinda having a hard time getting into the spirit this year.  Could be a lot of reasons.  The one year anniversary of my Pop's passing, another close family member facing a serious health issue, Thing #2 living so far away, the busy-ness of our lives, Miley Cyrus and her twerking, the economy of Greece, global warming, Ohio State losing to Michigan State (with apologies to my Ohio peeps, HA!  Kidding, totally made my day seeing Urban Meyer pouting on the sideline).  Who really knows!  I'm just getting tired of playing hide-and-seek with my Ho-Ho-Ho.  It WILL get here.  It always does.  It's just late.  Must be stuck somewhere in the U.S. Postal delivery system with that package from Williams Sonoma I ordered.

In the meantime...I decorated last week.  At least the house can look nice for my Christmas spirit when it finally decides to pay me a visit.  I use to go balls to the wall with the Christmas decorating.  Those who see the inside of my house now would say "USE to????"  Bah-humbug, it's all relative. Whatcha see now, is nothing compared to what I use to do.  My basement storage looks like a  Christmas warehouse.  Anyone looking for specific decorations?  I probably have it in the dungeon, and I freely share my wealth. Yes, the abundance was embarrassing when we moved a few years ago.  I avoided eye-contact with my moving guys when they were lugging my Christmas emporium to new digs.

But I've been cutting back on the decorating each of the past few years.  Where it use to be a joy.  I'm finding it's becoming a bit more of a chore. And the season just seems so darn short this year for all the effort.  There are pitfalls that happen each year that are beginning to suck some of the fun out of decking my halls profusely.  Seriously Santa, all I want for Christmas is...

1.  A 10 foot pre-lit Christmas tree (that I paid a ransom for)...where ALL the lights are pre-lit.  95% ain't gonna cut it.

2.  Candles in my windows where the timers actually work,  and do what I tell them to do.

3.  Ladders that are tall enough to reach where I need to go...but weigh nothing.  All my ladders need to go to Weight Watchers.

4.  Glittery ornaments that are possessive of their glitter.  I don't like it all over my hands, face, and floors.

5.  Evergreen garlands that don't lose pieces.  My dogs seem to think the pieces make great chew toys.  Who wants to clean up after a sick dog after decorating?  Fa-la-la-la-la, la-freakin'-la.

6.  An elevator.  I must be getting old.  LOTS of decorations means LOTS of trudging up and down the stairs from the basement hauling boxes. If I can't get an elevator, can I at least get buns of steel?

7.  Snow when I'm decorating.  It totally helps put ya in a deck-the-halls kinda mood.  But then I want it to magically disappear because I don't want to have to drive in the snow to Target to pick up more lights.

8.  Brain cells smart enough to take advantage of a warmer weather day to put up the outdoor decorations instead of waiting til it's 30 degrees with a wind chill of 15.

9.  A GIIIINORMOUS roll of saran wrap to wrap my trees up nice and tight to store "as is" til next Christmas.

10.  My own personal elves to put all the cr@p away on January 2nd.  I'll be at Starbucks, they can text me when they are done.  Don't forget the candles in the windows with the bum timers.

Okay, okay.  Despite the annoyances I've gotta admit my house looks pretty darn festive.  You'd THINK whoever decorated it was in a Christmas kinda mood.  She WILL be...soon.  Fa-la-la-la-la.

Here's where I'm linking up today ..."The Party's On"

  2. I am with you....every year the christmas tree gets smaller and half of the decoration stays in the basement. Love the picture of "The Better Half"

  4. This is a tough year - that year of 1st's always is. Last year honey, you were in a fog & Christmas didn't really happen.
Chin up, hold tight - things will definitely begin to look up soon!

  5. My wife is afraid to decorate this year. After getting a puppy and two kittens, she is afraid of the inevitable tree climbing and chewing. Haha. It is tough to get into the spirit when the palm trees are swaying and it's 82
degrees outside. But my Christmas mood usually kicks in about the 15th. Have a happy holiday.

  7. Tough for me too. Not much spirit, but a few decorations went up anyway!

  8. Miley Cyrus and her twerking has done a number on my LIFE SPIRIT so having her put a damper on your holiday spirit is understandable. Maybe Santa will do something about her this year? Care to put that on your xmas list? HA! Stopping by from Sami's! <3

  9. I like your wishlist! I could use a few of those things too( ok all of them!). Our big pre lit tree had one measly row of lights that worked. The hubs cut all the wires and lights off of it. It was time, it was old, it weighs a ton. It took forever. We just added 4 strands of LED's...let's hope they last!

  10. Your list gave me so many smiles. :-) We decorated yesterday, and it really does seem like a chore sometimes. And the glitter--I looked in the mirror after finishing the tree, and I had lovely glitter all over my face and in my hair. And it doesn't just rub off with a quick slap of water. Oh, well. Small price to pay for the pretty lights of the trees--that's my favorite part.

  11. What a fantastic list...especially the saran wrap around the tree one! HAH! From what I can tell, you have a very festive and spirited home for the holidays.

  12. You are far ahead of me...I still have dead frozen pumpkins on the front porch. I have many of those same things on my list, seriously, the elevator is at the top!!

  13. Yep, You have me smiling at my computer once again.. Too funny. And what a list..Now that I'm living in an RV decorating is a breeze.. Not room for decorations.. Our Tree is outside, can't fit it inside. But Life is sweet that's for sure.. I Bet your house looks amazing..

    Hugs~

  14. I put up less and less too, I'm the only one which means I get to take it down too. I'm just starting today, even though my boxes have been out since right before Thanksgiving...I'm going to blame it all on my in-laws, okay? haha The thing that surprises me, is that I'm not the least bit stressed that I have nothing up yet, so weird?

  15. This made me chuckle. I can imagine how festive your home looks. We put up little other than our small tree, but what I love are the lights -- on the tree, around the windows, out front. The extra twinkles make me happy this season. Hope your Christmas spirit kicks in as December hurries by!

  16. Ha! You always make me laugh, but you've outdone yourself with this one...maybe because I relate so much? Sending you festive thoughts!

  17. First...how did I miss Ohio State losing to Michigan State? Must have had my head in the sand! And I've also felt a little like a walking Charlie Brown Christmas, totally disillusioned. I think if we could just take off of school/work from Thanksgiving to Christmas so we can decorate/gift give/prepare/whathaveyou without feeling like it's something else to cram into an already full schedule...I'd be pretty happy.

  18. That Miley has ruined Christmas for us all! LOL! I'd say your looking pretty festive! I still have to get my better half to put up the lights outside. I keep saying, but....

  19. Something about the kids growing up takes a lot of fun out of decorating. I haven't decorated in quite a few years.

  20. I think I chuckled from beginning to end and must admit that I am a little anemic on the ho-ho-ho side this year. Miley Cyrus - it figures!

  21. Well this had me chuckling big time. I agree with a lot of them and especially #6 - Our basement stairs are horrendous and I hate going up and down them.

  22. You cracked me up with the twerking comment, see somehow you are still managing to spread cheer.

  23. Just getting around to this one...and it totally cracked me up! I love your take, Kath...keep it coming!
