Song-ography, the 'Try' edition...

"You don't have to try so hard
You don't have to bend until you break
You just have to get up
You don't have to change a single thing...

It can be exhausting being a woman.  The pressure we put ourselves under, in our need to change ourselves in so many different ways, for people to accept and like us.  And that includes accepting and liking our self! I find it intriguing that human infants have no capacity for self-awareness and judgement. Yet some time before we turn two, we become conscious of our own thoughts and feelings.  Not only self-awareness...but OTHERS-awareness.  And at that young age we all step aboard the crazy train, and punch our ticket for the journey that will consume much of our lives. The quest to blend.  The quest to disguise.  The quest to be accepted by others.  The quest to hide and disguise our differences...our uniqueness.

...wait a second,
Why should you care, what they think of you
When you're all alone, by yourself,
do you like you?
Do you like you?"

-Try (Colbie Callait)

Hey, I'm preaching to the choir here.  And by the "choir" I mean my waaaay off-key self.  I've been riding this crazy train for more years than I'd like to admit.  My seat cushion has permanent indentations.  Metaphorically AND...not so metaphorically.  Sometimes ya just have to give it the old college try before you realize "What the hell!".  Granted, I am on the infamous 54-year college plan.  It takes some people longer than others to grow up and become who we really are.  It also takes more courage to embrace our uniqueness, than to hide it.  To like yourself for who you are, and who you aren't.

Do you like you?  As for me...I'm a work in progress.  But it IS progress, and I'm always trying.

Next week's Song-ography prompt is one of my all-time FAVORITE songs.  A song that came out in 1975, and holds different meanings and interpretations for me depending on what stage of life I am in when listening to it.  The song kinda morphs with me.  Which I guess is how you might define a timeless classic.  So thanks to Nicki at Bended Road Photos for reminding me that I am a complete moron for not remembering this song myself...

"Landslide"
Fleetwood Mac (Stevie Nicks)

Sorry for posting Song-ography early this week...but I will be away from any Internet this evening (when I normally would post).  I hope you all have fun with this one for next Tuesday.  So many ways to interpret and create with this song.

Thanks for joining in this week at  Song-ography.  And if you are stopping by here, and just not sure if you want to take the Nestea plunge....just TRY it...you'll like it!  There is no right or wrong photo, it doesn't have to be a new photo...it's however you choose to run with the song.  Can't wait to stop by everyones' blogs and see what you've done with "Try" this week.  I urge you all to do the same, I promise you'll be awed! And...thanks again for linking up.

  1. Great interpretation and I have to admit that I am a work in progress but I am getting better every day. I want my daughter to grow up and be a proud of who she is, to be confident and courageous. I must say that she is doing much better than me when I was her age! Thanks for hosting and have a good week!

  3. So so so true. Everyday we look around an we judge others or our selves. I am working so hard on comparing myself to myself. Makes it a little less stressful!

  4. I often sing to the melody of 'love thy self' when it comes to girls - but with a teenage son, I have learned it hits them as well, especially with the increasing sexualization in social/entertainment media, they are starting to get a dose of what women have endured for.ev.er!
Hey - thanks for the shout-out ... definitely looking forward to everyone take on next week's song.

  5. Love the energy of your post.

I don't remember the whole song but I remember "You don't have to bend until you break" and pulling off the road to hear it all.

  6. You are so easy to like! It is so true, however, that we need to get to a place where that validation isn't so important. I mean it is good to be mindful of others, but not to the point where it consumes and paralyzes our every thought. I have seasons where I care more than others, but it is just so good to become comfortable with who I am.

  7. Kathy, I love your writing -- deep and yet you always make me laugh, too. The photo of the two vastly different dogs is perfect for this song! Thanks for hosting again -- this is such a fun "party"!
