The sound of...

...silence.

"Sound of Silence"

Late nights do not agree with early mornings.  It's a conundrum.  I am not a "morning person".  But necessity often trumps nature.  Left to my own devices, I'd sleep.  Unfortunately for me, my own devices went AWOL another lifetime ago.  I do love my family.  And on most days, I wouldn't trade them for anything.  Yet, I've come to realize I kinda relish the sound of silence that accompanies morning.  The stillness.  The moments of just "being", when the house is empty.  Except for moi.

...that first cup of coffee sipped in stillness

...contemplating the quiet promise of a new day and all it's possibilities

...straightening up the left behinds of the familial unit, and knowing it will remain anally tidy for the few hours until their return

--singing whatever the morning magic moves me.  singing it wonderfully.  I should have been a rock star.  actually, I kinda am in the mornings...the dogs tell me so.  they don't lie.

...knowing I only have to answer to me.  I can be kinda tough on myself tho.  I can usually handle it.

I think I might be going thru an identity crisis.  I've never considered myself an introvert, I've always been rather outgoing and usually enjoy the company of people.  Okay, not ALL people.  But quite a few of them.  Can you be an introvert in the mornings, and an extrovert the rest of the day?  Or maybe I'm just getting old.  Old people always seem to like mornings.  And watch the Weather Channel.  And always know where to buy the cheapest gasoline.  1 outta 3.  NOT old, yet.  Apparently I'm just a "relatively" young introvert who relishes the silence...and mornings.

Here's where I "link up" today.

Please join me on Sundays for Song-ography.
This week's song title is Pharrell Williams' "Happy".

  1. I love the mornings...something about the quiet and alone time and time to be with my thoughts before the bustle of the day begins. I am also coveting your kitchen cabinets. So many!!!!!

  3. I love this image! If my kitchen was this sunny, I might get up and enjoy coffee earlier. I kind of loath mornings, but I like the idea of them. I want to like them. The peace you describe sounds wonderful. I think some of the introversion comes with age when we circle our wagons a little closer because we just ain't got no time for foolishness.

  4. I am NOT a morning person either. But I drag my hiney to school 45 minutes earlier than the rest of the world just so I can enjoy the "silence" of it all. But I love my vacation breaks & summer as the morning's are mine………..all gloriously mine!!

  5. I can relate to so much of what you're saying (apt photo too by the way). When I get any chance of alone time in this house I soak up every second - it's beyond bliss. I also understand what you mean when having time to chat with your thoughts and the times when they get carried away!

  7. I can relate. I'm not a "morning" person at all and lately (now that I am getting older) I love silence in the mornings. Not happening with a 9 year old living here though.

  8. First of all, like everyone else...I love your kitchen.

In the past 4 years, I have come to love and savor mornings more than any other time of day. It seems to be the only time I can selfishly have to myself without interruption. I bought a gate to put at the top of the stairs as a visual reminder to my 7 and 9 year old girls that I'm not ready to be in mom mode yet.

I find myself dreaming about extended amounts of time in my home alone - a whole day - a whole weekend - a whole week. I might eventually get bored or lonely, but it sounds like bliss! As a homeschooling mom, I don't get days alone...so I treasure the early hours of morning and guard them carefully!

  10. You look like a teenager sitting there!! I don't see an old person in sight! And like I said on I/G I love your kitchen! I like the quiet in the mornings too after everyone has left for the day!

  12. I used to be a morning person, going for an early run, writing poetry. But that was in my younger days when I had stamina and a good brain. Now I am a morning person, still up at 3 a.m. because the white noise in my head gets louder when I am trying to sleep.

How did you get up on the counter top like that? I can't do that anymore..........where's the step stool?

  13. I love the mornings, my brain works better, the light is always better in the morning and it's usually quiet in my house in the morning. Love the bright kitchen, and the perspective of the shot.

  17. So funny, the first thing I thought was, 1--I love your kitchen, 2--how did you take the picture of yourself (timer or someone else) and 3--I LOVE quiet mornings before my children wake up.

  18. I love this unique perspective - sitting on a counter with your FEET on it makes it quite edgy - I'd say you are definitely NOT old!

  23. your photo is beautiful... what an amazing kitchen.....fabulous selfie as well.

as for the intro/extro.... you can be one.... the other...or a mix of both.....
it's in silence that we truly find ourselves..... :)
i love the book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking
The author, Susan Cain, also has a great ted talk.....

Can you tell I'm in intro? :) xo

  24. I am not a morning person either, and yes that is the time of day I least want to share with other people so maybe it is that which makes us both morning introverts. We just a while to 'power up' to company

  25. i'm not a morning person either but i have found if i am up in the early morning i can enjoy that quietness you so fondly speak of. it's a time where poetry can come alive or, most especially, a time where i can grow spiritually. i too love my family but there's something to be said about quietness. have a great weekend~

  26. I never was a morning person and I don't think I am now, because I still start my 8 - 5 work rather at 9. However, on the weekend, when everybody else sleeps in, I get up at 6:30 or 7:00 and then I have a few hours, before hubby gets up, and the world is mine. I have my coffee, I go running, I check my fav blogs or I create an image - whatever, but those couple of hours on weekend morning's are a little bit sacred to me these days. So much that I get ever so slightly grumpy when hubby dares to get up somewhat early :)
I also think that you can be a little bit of both, introvert and extrovert. I know I am. I am usually quiet, a very good listener, but, when I know someone, am comfortable within my network, I can pretty much 'take over' if you know what I mean - it just depends ;)
