Fine-tuning Fall...

"Following the Herd"
Lambertville, New Jersey

Disclaimer:  I really DO love Autumn.  Truth-be-told, it's my favorite season of the year.  I am blessed to live in a part of the country that truly experiences the changes all four seasons of the year offer.  Mother Nature is kinda awesome like that here in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.  But as I sat down this morning to pay my bills (which is apparently when I do my best pondering because WHO wants to think about bills?), I realized there are a few things that kinda rub me the wrong way about Fall, despite my love for the season.  The same could be said for my Better-Half, so Autumn is in excellent company as far as I'm concerned.  I mean, you live with something long enough you are bound to find little things you'd really like to fine tune.  So today, I bring you the top five reasons why Fall is great, yet not perfect.  I just look at this as my little way to help Fall out, by giving it some goals for self-improvement:

1.  Property Taxes!  Yep, wrote out that monstrosity of a check this morning.  WHY is that due in October? Either the deadline should be moved, or Christmas should be moved...because it's hard for me to give to the levels I WANT to in December, when I've already given to the levels I DON'T want to in October.

2.  Open-toed boots.  What am I missing here, the whole concept is warped in my mind. The least of my questions is..."you mean I need a pedicure 365 days of the year now?"  Fashion faux pas Fall!

3.  Cooler weather means...jeans.  Which also means that I didn't wear shorts for the first 3/4 of summer because my legs were too pale and ghostly.  Now that I've finally gotten them tanned so that every little flaw doesn't show, it gets too cold to show them?  I'd give Fall a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

4.  Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year.  BUT Pumpkin Pie?  Kinda gags me. Altho, I'd gladly sub in pumpkin-spiced coffee, and pumpkin flavored beers instead.

5.  Candy Corn.  Toothache just looking at it.  Plus, who in their right mind wears orange AND yellow together at the same time?!?  Lest you think candy corn is just for kids, I actually took a gander at "Candy Corn Vodka" in the State Store the other day (State Store = Pennsylvania's antiquated method for alcohol disbursement).  Which means, I can now have a toothache AND a hangover at the same time while drinking a martini.

Fall...I love ya.  But you gotta little work to do.

  5. i would have to see an open toed boot before i even would consider wearing it ... sounds odd? candy corn too sweet for me ... not that i will never eat them but i prefer something else if i had the option. i will wear shorts when the legs are shaved & who cares if folks think i am too white. considering that is my real color i prefer showing them legs, i got burnt tanning once & will never do it again. i dislike shaving big time so it is a big deal ... why would i shave & then wear a pair of jeans... silly!! any who ... i have gone on & on ... have a good weekend. ( :
one of these days i will link up to your song posts ... if i can get my act together & the brain can think of something super cool to do??! ( :

  6. The image is gorgeous! Loved your list. My only complaint is jeans, which look good, but really are uncomfortable in the low rise style...but I ain't wearing no mom jeans!

  7. Gack! I've never SEEN candy corn vodka! I.usually love to try new thing, but with that, i'd definitely hesitate. :)

The west coast is gorgeous in the fall, but it doesn't compare to the northeast. Not at all!

  8. Thanksgiving is also my FAVE holiday! You make we want to stop and grab a 6 pk of pumpkin brew on the way home from work. And I don't have to go to the beer distributor. (I remember the PA days). I can go to the grocery store for it. And another pumpkin yummy, is pumpkin soup! Pumpkin bread, cookies...Another great post, Kathy. And a terrific shot. Have a terrific weekend! Aloha

  11. Oh Kathy! I agree with all of those FALL problems. But you left one out. The time of year when all the crazies that are not on their meds, have to run around nude or rob banks or commit horrid crimes just because the moon is putting or pulling pressure on them. I love Springtime and I'll say it over and over. Since blogging however, I have realized MANY if not all blogger really love Autumn. Me, not so much. We have had excellent weather today tho, EXCELLENT! ♥ [ps. Great photograph! ]

  16. Oh, that shot is so peaceful and captures fall perfectly. My taxes are due in December. Maybe should look into moving to California :) But then you would miss the changing of the leaves. We have mostly evergreens . . . and I've never seen an open-toed boot!

  18. Haha! You've outdone yourself with this post - it made me laugh throughout. :D And wow, that photo is spectacular. We've had rain for FOUR days straight here, so no picture taking for me - I'm getting cabin fever.

  22. Beautiful shot.
Here in the Texas Hill Country, we get about 15 minutes of Fall.....straight from Summer, into Winter...well, what we call winter.

Candy Corn vodka....oh, my...I just might have to find me some of that.

  23. I agree - candy corn makes me sick just to see it, imagine what it does to vodka! Love love the photo though.

  24. I didn't get past your perfect Autumn photo -- did you say something about Fall? :) Just kidding -- but sorry, I do love me some candy corn mixed with peanuts. Well, I did before I started this Paleo thingy.

  25. visiting via Nancy at A Rural Journal...great answers and dearly love that photo of sheep...beautiful! I'm with you on open toed boots, makes NO sense whatsoever. Just like property taxes where I get almost nothing for my money. Sheriff's Department...yes, but school system...around here it's a job where one can fail 50% of the time and not only keep their job but get raises and excellent benefits. About 50% of h.s. students here are graduated reading and doing math at an 8th grade level.
