"In Print"
Week #3 January 14 - January 21, 2013
Project 52 (3/52)

...book.

The week that was...

Well, it took me 645 days to get 'er done.  Yea "Procrastination" is thy name.  It arrived on my front door step last week. Mega thanks to my cute "Man in Brown" for the special delivery.  My first 365 days of blogging.  In print.  Bound.  For prosperity AND...my coffee table. To prove to future generations of 'moi' that I actually did something.  Boo-yah.  Just between us, gotta tell ya I'm kinda proud of myself.  That SHOULD happen more often, but it's a rare commodity for moi. There is just something about seeing a year's worth of work creative outlet in material form before your eyes to make ya wanna go to Nordstrom's shoe department to celebrate.

It's kinda cool to go back and look at a year in my life.  And I discovered a few things...

1.  That WOW did my photography improve from day #1 til day #365.  Kinda shocked to see the transformation laid out in front of me.  It made me cringe a bit to see some of those first photographs that I thought were "oh so good".  They weren't. Sort of like that crazy colored Muu-Muu I bought in Hawaii that I thought would be oh so chic to lounge around in.  Until I realized I looked more like a Moo-Moo in it.

2.  I also discovered that I kinda cracked myself up a few times with what I wrote.  Seriously, I have no idea why my "Things" don't find me freakin' hilarious all the time.  Disclaimer:  except for when I was wearing my Moo-Moo.

3.  To my chagrin, I also shuddered at a few crap-ola posts that I should've just gone to the gym instead of sitting behind the computer wasting time on.  That's okay tho, made me come to the conclusion to try to be more discerning this year.

If any of you bloggers are considering a similar project I would highly recommend Blurb.  I am in no way, shape, or form being compensated for this ringing endorsement (altho...I'd gladly accept it).  The quality of the photographs is fantastic, and the program they utilize for converting blogs to books is easy to navigate.  Okay, maybe not easy AT FIRST...but it became real easy once I stopped hyper-ventilating.

Since I started my blog in July 2011, I'm already half way thru year #2 of blogging.  Which means, "The Return of...You'll Shoot You're Eye Out" will be gathering dust on my coffee table before I know it.  Boo-yah again.

  5. I am excited to do this as well...have looked at a few companies, but leaning towards blurb. Haven't spent too much time with the program yet, but curious...can you adjust placement of text/photos once they've grabbed it? Can you adjust the size of the photos? Thanks!

  7. That's a great idea and I wish I thought of that sooner. Now I have 6 years of blogging under my belt, and that seems daunting to try to print. You are a smart woman!

  8. Good for you! If it makes you feel any better....I find you hilarious pretty much all of the time. (I'm not committing to 100% because you do, occasionally, say serious things and I'd hate to laugh inappropriately!).

  12. Dang, I just lost my comment. Anyway, congrats on your blurb book! I make a photo book for Christopher every year and I am now two years behind, so I know how you feel.

  13. Ha! You crack me up! Rock on! You should be proud of yourself! There is something to be said about putting your work in an official book form! Congrats!

  14. Aha...thanks for the info on the book. I am wanting to do the same thing. I do think that saving our work in a more permanent form is well worth it.

  15. a delightful entry kathy, i have done the same. i print in 6 months increments and have 3 books so far.

i love my books, i keep them right on the coffee table and offer peeps $ 5.00 to look at them, most people pass!! i'm not sure why i can't find any "real" people who love me (and my work) as much as i do.

  22. I love that you did this!! It makes me want to do it, too. Did you host a book signing? ;o) When I go back and look at some of my early posts, I cringe and laugh. Will you be going on tour?

  24. Wow - a complete hands down to you Kathy. I would love to flick through the pages with you in the chair next to me and hearing you comment along the way (sharing a wine, cheese - maybe some camembert? dip and crackers). Well done.

  26. I have done sorted and various derivations on work from my blog for a photo book each year since I started blogging. They have, however, turned more into family yearbooks, going from excerpts from what I wrote in my blog, to summaries of what happened that month, to pretty much just pictures this year (am awaiting the delivery any day now!). Perhaps next year I'll give Blurb a go (signed up for it long ago, couldn't really figure it out in a nano-second ... my bad!) and actually print my blog. Oh boy, now the pressure to write something I want to have to re-read for years to come.

    Now go celebrate at Nordstroms!

  27. This is awesome...it's something I keep toying around with the idea of, and you make me REALLY want to do it. Congrats to you, Kathy - if its any consolation, I laugh at your wonderful humor every single time I visit your blog! :D

  28. Congrats. What a cool thing to do for yourself, muu-muu and all. I too see growth in my photos and think of earlier ones I thought were good, and weren't. However if I really look-there are things that are good in composition or light or line or something. If nothing else, that's what drives us forward. I resisted the urge to delete shitty posts-especially early on. If that's where we were, well it just is.
Enjoy... reviewing. I find it helps me remember a year much better than if I didn't have this pictoral journal. As long as you didn't shoot yourself in the muu-muu, I think you're OK. Now go buy those shoes!

  29. I agree, the book is a wonderful idea and so glad you took yourself seriously and did it. I am also so happy to get to see the "firsts" of of your photos when you post them here. I hope you never stop! Happy Day!

  31. This is just great Kathy... something that I have thought of doing myself. So fun to have this for later people who wondered "who you are / were". and also so you can see your own personal growth. do I dare ask how the pricing is on this??

  32. A couple of weeks ago I had asked someone how to preserve our posts in book form and she suggested Blurb, too! I am so computer UN-savvy that I cringe at even getting started. But what a great way to see growth in ourselves. Hmmmm.... going to have to find a computer teacher that comes to my home to help! Yikes!

    1. Believe me when I say 99.9% of the population is MORE computer savvy than me. It was a bit overwhelming AT FIRST. But once I sat down and uttered a few curse words...it all made sense :)
