This is a first...

I've been MIA from blogging due to DIYing.  Unlike the rest of my familial unit, I am NOT a "handicraft" type person.  The DIY gene conveniently skipped right over moi.  When I see something I like, usually one of two things happens:

1.  I ask my mom to make it for me.

2.  I buy it from Etsy, or somewhere else where it is already finito.

But I finally found something SO EASY to make that even I couldn't rationalize not giving it a shot myself.  I call it a "Ribbon Hangy Thingy".  Yeah, that's the technical term for them.  I was looking for something to hang over the tables of Thing #2's Baby Shower that I will be hosting this summer. And after the shower? One could be used over the crib as a mobile (if Thing #2 doesn't want one...I'll hang it over the crib I will have at my home when Grand baby-to-be comes to visit me....OFTEN).

"Ribbon Hangy Thingy"

The ribbons catch the breeze, or any movement in the air, so beautifully.  I am planning an outdoor barbeque baby shower...so the dancing ribbons should be perfect.

All I needed for this project was an embroidery hoop (pick whatever size works for your purpose), and LOTS of different ribbons.  Thing #2's nursery is going to be in shades of grey and pink/coral.  So I am keeping the theme of the baby shower in the same color family.  Then the search for ribbon began.  Do you know how hard it is to find ribbon that ISN'T wired?  Yeah...I do!

From here it is easy.  Just measure the length of your ribbon (2x the desired length), and cut into strips.  I like to vary my lengths so it doesn't look so uniform.  Then loop the ribbon over the embroidery hoop and knot it.

I placed all the ribbons randomly around the hoop so it looked like there was no rhyme or reason to their placement.  The last thing to do is to add ribbon to hang the "Ribbon Hangy Thingy".  Voila!

Okay, I admit there is ONE thing left to do.  Figure out HOW IN THE HECK I'm actually going to hang these above the tables.  And THAT is where the Better Half becomes useful.  If I'm not coming up with ideas and asking my mom to create them for me...I'm asking the Better Half to figure out how to make my ideas actually work.  Luckily...he hasn't failed me yet.  Stay tuned for the conclusion of the "Ribbon Hangy Thingy" saga.

  5. I love these ribbon hangy things. They are going to look so cute at the shower! I've seen them hung in closets like a faux chandelier so I'm sure one will end up somewhere in the nursery.
