So here's the thing...

...I love proving people wrong.  Dispelling myths.  Showing them the error of their ways. It's all a part of being the modest unassuming gal that I am. Lucky for me I am a mom, so proving people wrong is  part of my job description.  And my Things can vouch for how seriously I embrace that task!  But I also live in a city that is often misunderstood.   Has a not so stellar rep.  Often gets a bad rap.  So I get LOTS of opportunities to do what I love to do...

...show others the errors of their ways.  Especially when it comes to my  Philly.

Which brings me to my gals.  People let me tell ya about some of best friends.  Three California girls, that I met online.  Who I flew across country to meet in person, by myself.  Yep, EVERYTHING I would kill my Things for doing.  Do what I say, not as I do.  We are all "baseball moms" who met virtually on a high school baseball website when our boys were teenagers and navigating the college baseball recruiting system. We were all looking for guidance and knowledge. Because you know as moms, we are expected to know EVERYTHING.  Thirteen years ago.  We have two common ties that bind us.  Our sons, and baseball.  Okay, then there's the third...wine (and one who drinks Baileys and cream...gag).

All our boys played college ball, so we were apparently great learners on that website (okay, AND  our boys were pretty good ball players). Today?  Only one of our boys still plays baseball.  Yep, we got a pro amongst us.  One outta four.  Baseball is a game of stats, and this ain't a bad one. Every year we get together for a girls weekend. I've always flown out west to meet up with them.  But my baseball playing son, the Thing that was MY driving force to that baseball website thirteen years ago, got married a couple weeks ago.  I figured if it wasn't for him...I wouldn't have met my gals.  So from three different parts of California they flew east to celebrate.  And so began my work at proving any negative thoughts they might have had about Philly were totally WRONG.

Granted, it was a crash course.  First there was the wedding.  Then there was trying to find a bar in Philly on an Eagles home game Sunday, that would allow us to commandeer one of their televisions so we could watch our remaining baseball playing son pitch (shout out to O'Neal's Pub on South Street!  Yes Virginia, there ARE nice peeps in Philly.).  Once a baseball mom, always a baseball mom...we DO have our priorities.  And, we also got the win to celebrate.  Boo-yah Bucco's.

And then?  We just strolled, ate, and MAYBE had a glass or two of wine (or Baileys).  From the steps of Rocky at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Thru the cobble stoned streets of Olde City...

...to mid-town.  I gotta admit, it was a perfect couple of days.  The H-H-H's (hazy, hot and humid) were  AWOL.  Just sunshine, autumn temps, and laughter.

My job was sooooooo easy youse guys!  Like taking a cheesesteak from a baby, with Whiz.  "Why didn't you tell us?"  I thought I HAD.  Actually, I'm pretty confident I had.  But sometimes, ya just gotta see to believe.  After all, I always DO refer to them as living on the left coast while I live on the "RIGHT" coast.

To a Californian, everything is pretty "old" here in Philly.  Which they loved.  And I guess from their perspective, they are right.  But it's all relative. From a European's point of view...we are mere babes.  However, the history IS one of the things I do love about my Philly.  Well that, AND the hoagies, cheesesteaks, Italian wooter ice, Goldbergs peanut chews, Tastykakes, AND Wawa.

Proving people wrong.  I just do it so well.  Gawd I love my job.

  6. Change the 'baseball' to 'music', and I have the exact same story...three weeks from today I'll be in Williamsburg, VA with my three online friends for our first girls' weekend! One of the four is coming all the way from Australia! We've been in daily contact online since 2006. Sometimes the internet can be a beautiful thing. Your weekend looks spectacular - I'm glad you were able to prove them wrong! Philly is beautiful - I visited once and loved it. :)

  7. Thanks for the great tour! My daughter's former boyfriend ("ex" sounds too harsh for such an amicable split) recently moved to Philadelphia and I'm hoping to visit one day. The city's history is a big draw for me, too. Though I live in Maine now, I'm originally a far-west girl myself. Where I grew up, buildings 15 or 20 years old were considered historic.

  12. Well if that's the case then you are excellent in your role because I've always been convinced about your impressions about this place, so much so that if I ever travel over your way, your city is on my visit list.

  14. Kath, this is the greatest story of friendship! Just love the bond that brought you three together! The photo of you gals jumping had me jumping with delight. Absolutely precious! I have not been to Philly, but both hubby and I love history. Hope to go there some day. Yup, you are definitely good at proving people wrong! Thanks for sharing with SYC.

  15. It took me a while to comment on this photo essay. I love them all, in fact I have bad copies of almost all the same ones! Yours are prose, mine...a not good imitations. Please don't ever break up with James Dean. The two of you together are magic. And I DID ask to come to Philly a few years ago, but I am glad I waited. The timing was perfect, the weather was perfect and the reason was perfect. It could not have been a better weekend, thanks to you!

You captured the feeling and the mood perfectly. Thank you dear friend.
