Song-ography, the 'Landslide' edition...

Landslide.  What IS the landslide that can "bring you down"?  I give that kind of power to "time".  The passing of it.  So quickly it has the capacity to envelope you.  Bury you.  If you let it.  And I've been known to let it do that to me on occasion.  It's hard not to when you see your Things growing up.  Moving out.  Moving on.  Without you.  Children do get older, and I'm getting older too.  Relationships are fluid.  Even those that are familial.  They morph into new shapes and dynamics with they passing of time.  Landslides have that effect.  This I have learned.

"Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
And can I sail through the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life"

-Landslide (Fleetwood Mac)

Tis the season of my life.  It's full of changes.  The trick is to accept, learn, adapt and just keep on truckin'.  And to borrow from another song lyric...I get by with a little help from my friends.  I've never had a prolific number of friends.  Truth-be-told, girlfriends can bug the bejeezus outta me.  I just don't "get them".  I haven't had much luck in that department when it comes to longevity.  Guys?  That's a horse of a different color...THEM I get!   Girlfriends have come.  Girlfriends have gone.  I believe everyone comes in your life for a reason.  Sometimes it's just for a season or a purpose.  I have learned from ALL of them.  All have been good lessons for various reasons.  Whether I've liked those lessons at the time or not.

But if you are REALLY fortunate, you have that one friend who enters your life...and plants roots.  I am lucky.  We have never lived near each other since we both graduated from high school thirty-seven years ago (told ya....LANDSLIDE!).  At times, we have gone a few months without conversing.  Yet we always know we are there for each other.  She is my travel companion, as we both always seem to be navigating the same ocean tides and seasons of our lives together.  Sometimes to ridiculous lengths...hello...our first born Things were born within four hours of each other!?!?  And we now lament this landslide of time passing by way too quickly for our liking. We lament it a LOT.  The best medicine for it? Getting together and laughing.  And crying sometimes. Which we did this past weekend on her home turf...Chicago.  We have been friends since we got over strongly disliking each other in high school.  It just took us a little bit of time to get over ourselves.  Not to mention a few guys we had to get over too, which totally eliminated any angst between us.  It's been smooth sailing ever since.  The four of us...we are lucky...the Better-Halves kinda like us, and each other, too.

A partner in crime, a bestie, a travelling companion...sure helps me stay ahead of that landslide.  At the very least, it's not so lonely.  And sometimes misery DOES love company.  And other times...company DOES kick misery right in it's buttocks.  If the landslide doesn't disappear, it sure does slow down.  I sure love my Bestie, I probably do not tell her that enough.  I hope she knows.  I would be lost without her.  Probably in a landslide.

Before we get to linking up THIS Tuesday's Song-ography posts, take a look at next week's song.  It's by one of my new favorite groups (thanks again to Thing #3 hogging my car radio and forcing me to broaden my horizons)...

  3. Great to find, have and hold your bestie! Nothing, well, almost nothing better than that. I am very much with you in that respect. Through my life there have been two BFFs from way back and we live apart all the time. Very much so, Australia, Germany, USA. But like you, months can by, then we talk and everything is like old times. It is a wonderful feeling. :)
I saw your video on fb and kept thinking - the wine, the wine, they're going to splash the wine! LOL
