Under the super moon...

...at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

"Steel Pier"
Atlantic City, New Jersey

Steel Pier.  A 1,000 foot long amusement pier in  Atlantic City.  Opened in 1898 and once considered the "Showplace of the Nation"...or at least the East Coast...which to us East Coasters IS the nation.   Originally debuting as a theatre, the Steel Pier expanded to include attractions and rides. Not to mention every great entertainer of the day including Frank Sinatra to Al Jolson to the Beatles...

(No...I did not take these photos)

...and its famous diving horses.  Despite being all kinds of wrong...I gotta admit it's kinda mesmerizing in it's equine "Take the Nestea Plunge" bizarre-ness. And I can't forget those "American Bandstand" rip off shows of my youth,  which were broadcast from the Steel Pier via UHF channels on the weekends.  If that doesn't date me then the cans of Vidal Sassoon hairspray, curling irons, and bottles of "Sun In" natural hair lightener clogging my bathroom counter tops surely did.

Super Moon.  A full moon that occurs when the moon is nearest the Earth during its elliptical orbit around our planet (see,  I paid attention in science class...sometimes).  The moon appears bigger, and brighter to the naked eye.

Steel Pier + Super Moon = I should probably buy a better camera lens for the NEXT astronomical phenomenon

It's too bad my camera doesn't produce "scratch and sniff" photographs.  If it did, it would allow you to scratch and sniff the...

  3. love your shots, and good try on that moon. It is really hard to believe that those horses actually dived off of that platform... not to mention the person on the horse.

  5. Awesome shots, Kathy. These are perfectly summer nostalgia to me. I've never been to a pier such as this, but looks like loads of fun.

  6. Maybe it's just the residual Disney crowd/food/smells/sounds rummaging in my head - but I totally sensed it in these pictures even without the scratch-&-sniff. Fun share.

  7. Vidal Sassoon hairspray in that brown plastic pump bottle....and Sun In that made MY hair orange....not blond! (I didn't realize that you can't use that and go from brown to platinum blonde....like the bottle showed....that cute teenager with such white blond hair! Of course, my orange hair matched my orange QT tan! lol Boy, was I a looker!) I still have my curling iron....curls are BOUND to come back in style before I die and I'd hate to have to go spend another $7 on one! lol Thanks for that comment that made me realize how stupid I always looked in the summer! :)

  8. These may not be the moon photos you had hoped for, but I think they are great together with the whirling fun rides :) The end of September will be the first time I will make it down there, but not sure I will make it to Steel Pier, we'll see...

  11. GREAT shots!
Although I'm a North Carolina girl now (and have been for several decades), I was born and raised in the Philly area & have fond memories of Atlantic City. I doubt I'd recognize anything there now!
I want to invite you to the new home of Wordless Wednesday (on Tuesday) at http://image-in-ing.blotspot.com/ each week at midnight Tuesday, EST. 12. You've got to stop this - with these brilliant photos!!! Kathy - I wish I could do what you do with your camera. I'm envying all of these shots. I'm sorry I've been absent of late. I really enjoyed looking at your daughter's wedding shots, it looked like such a lovely location and such lovely style added by you and your daughter in terms of planning. Renee

    1. Hey Kenya...that first shot was not done via iphone. It was accomplished thru editing and wanting to emphasize the neon lighting.

  14. Great images, love seeing the old in contrast to the new. Those horse dives looked damn scary. I remember sun-in . . . those were the days.

  15. Fabulous photos, my girlfriend! I love to be at amusement parks just for the thing you listed as to the smell; the atmosphere. Our states amusement park is about 5 minutes from our home and I haven't been this year so perhaps I can sneak in in September when my tummy and heart would be ready to "take it all in". Fun post!!!!
