Damn Yankee...

What did you do for Mother's Day?  I crossed the Mason-Dixon Line, to Winchester, Virginia... and morphed into a Damn Yankee.   Truth-be-told I was born south of the Mason-Dixon Line.  Not THAT far south.  But I apparently had enough southern belle in moi, that when our family moved to Philly the school district put me into speech classes to exorcise myself of a bit of a southern drawal.  Once a week I got pulled out of class.  Me and my chair.  Into the hall with the speech teacher and her phonics books.  Are you aware the words:  marry, merry and the name Mary aren't pronouced the same? Yeah, I didn't either.  Still don't. But she did make her mark and left me forever after enunciating "water" the proper way...WOOTER.  Because youse guys all know we are awesome tawkers here in Philly.

"In Memory Of"
Winchester, Virginia

Winchester, Virginia is a town full of history.  Civil War history.  Shrines to fallen Confederate soldiers.  Stonewall Jackson's headquarters. Beautiful architecture.

...and a charming historic PEDESTRIAN "Old Town" section of the city.  Did I mention "pedestrian"?

...that my "Damn Yankee" of a Better-Half decided to DRIVE down.  In his defense.  He's too trusting.  I told him not to believe all those drunk guys standing in front of the bar, who were waving him on.  But I kinda like that trusting nature.  It makes me actually think he BELIEVES it when I tell him "Oh THESE shoes?  I've had them foreverrrrrr."

After all the grief and ribbing I gave him the rest of the weekend, I hate to admit to the Better Half that he DID wind up giving me the best Mother's Day gift ever. The realization that even at MY age, I am still thin enough AND flexible enough to fit under the dashboard of his car!  WINNING! Damn "embarrassed" Yankee that I am.

Here's where I "link up" today.

Please join me on Sundays for Song-ography.
This week's song title is the Jack Johnson's "Upside Down".

  4. I'm a native Virginian, but I've never explored Winchester. Great pics! I can't imagine having speech therapy to wipe out a drawl--that made me laugh. :-) I lived in Ohio for several years, and apparently that caused me to lose some of my accent. But my dad had the best Virginia accent--he spoke as if all the rough edges and sharp points on the words were rubbed off.

  8. Hahahahaha. I can sorta relate. My parents moved us from NYC to Virginia when I was 7. I am very sure that the kind teacher who bent over lovingly and talked so gently to me meant well. But I could not understand a thing she was saying. Not a thing. I was convinced that we had really moved to a foreign county where I did not know the language. Y'all, It took me lot of years to get the twang I have now.

  9. These are gorgeous, as always! You do a great job on travel photos. I can't believe you had speech therapy for a slight southern draw. We'd be in big trouble down here in Georgie. Yee Haw!

  15. You got some fabulous shots here. The architectural features of these buildings is awesome. Your poor hubby. I once drove down a road in a college town that wasn't meant to be driven on either and then I ended up driving off the sidewalk just to get back to a regular street with college kids staring at me and no doubt laughing about it. Needless to say I opted not to attend that college.
