Song-ography, the "Up on the Roof" edition...

Welcome back to Song-ography.  This week's song title is James Taylor's "Up on the Roof".  I have to tell ya, SOME of you have me a bit concerned.  I've heard talk of some of you actually climbing up on your rooftops to take photos!  Now that I know whom I'm dealing with here, I've taken mental note to never suggest "Hurts so Good", "King of Pain" or "Jump in the Fire" as possible song titles.  Let's be safe out there kids!

"Up on the Roof"
Barcelona, Spain

Under normal circumstances I really do not like pigeons.  In Philly, they are merely rats with wings who enjoy using you as a target for bodily functions...and SOME call that a "lucky sign", yuck. But in Barcelona?  They are so much more suave and sophisticated.  Probably because they are Spanish.   They like to perch themselves on rooftops, preferably those rooftops with infinity-edged pools, and survey their kingdom down below them. I was up on a Barcelona roof one morning, just Senor Pigeon and myself.  I told him of his white trash family living in Philly. He was appalled. I supported his disdain.

Can't wait to see your interpretations of "Up on the Roof", especially from any of you daredevils (not that I encourage that or anything!).  But first, here is a look at next week's song title:

"Here Comes the Sun"
George Harrison and friends

George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun".  While most girls seemed to like John or Paul, I was always a George gal (don't even get me started on "Something" and "While my Guitar Gently Weeps").  Lots and lots and LOTS of ways this can be interpreted and played with creatively.  Enjoy, because NEXT week I'm gonna start getting a little tougher on you with more challenging song titles...now that I've lured you in.

Thanks for linking up, and I look forward to visiting and seeing what you came up with.

  1. Kathy I must say so far you have great taste in music.
The shot of this pigeon is fabulous. I love the blur of the city in the background and how clear and blue the pool water is. Mr. Pigeon does look pretty suave.
Believe me I thought about a rooftop shot but seriously that would have been a heart stopping photography shoot since I'm scared to death of heights. My hubby talked me into getting up on our roof one day and then I refused to go back down the ladder (maybe I have a fear of ladders instead) and told him I would just jump off the roof. Needless to say he didn't agree to that but had to physically force me to get on the ladder and climb back down.

  2. Wonderful shot Kathy. I failed utterly to get one for this title but will be back next week (we've had enough sun this last week to last me for the rest of the year!).

  4. Barcelona, Spain! Seriously? !!! :)

Yea, I'll just zip over to Europe for a quick snap shot for song-ography --- wonder if my husband will understand?

Kidding aside - great shot; challenging tune that made me actually hop in the SUV and venture into town to hunt for something. I haven't been compelled to go out and hunt for a shot in a long time. Thanks for the kick in the creative butt.

Look forward to next week. Have a good Sunday Kathy.

  5. I'm better at looking up at great heights rather than looking down from them. Yet I love flying in a plane. Love this shot of a pigeon who inadvertently has become a star spokespigeon for all suave Spanish pidgies. He has a great view.

  6. Kudos. Making art of the pigeon is at least one use for them! I haven't met a Spanish pigeon yet, maybe they will change my attitude of them.

  15. Wow! what a beautiful pool. It might take me a bit to get used to it though...and talk about a bird's eye view.

  16. Happy Sunday! Love your photo and your story - smiles all around. I too, dislike pigeons - and funny enough, I refer to them as flying rats. Gross.Yuck.Can do without. I am sincerely enjoying this meme..it's allowing me to search through my photo files and reminisce. Thx!

  18. I never thought a photo with a pigeon in it would be beautiful but you managed to make it so.

  19. Loving your taste in music as well.
I do agree, European pigeons are just more sophisticated. Your Philly pigeons have some white trash cousins up here in Toronto as well.

I am constantly blown away with the imagination of fellow bloggers when it comes to a challenge.
    Well done, everyone!

  20. Love this image....the blues and oranges providing a stunning backdrop for that pidgeon who probably doesn't deserve such a lovely setting. Pidgeons, seagulls-same thing.
    Have a great day.
Any chance you gonna figure out how to make that cool icon into a button? I'd love to include it in my posts.

    1. OMGosh Susan, do you know how much it took out of me to figure out a link up??!!?? Haha. I am TRYING to figure the whole "button" thing out. So far, I'm a dunce. Do you know how to do it? Or ANYONE know what I need to do? Thanks :)

    2. I've done it once a while back, so let's see if i recall correctly. I think the easiest way is to have a Photobucket account, add your picture to your account, and there are buttons within Photobucket that creates the html language automatically for your button. Copy and paste that HTML onto your site for others to copy and paste. When they do, your image should appear. Now I need to try this again!

    3. Boy - was I determined to learn this again. I knew how to make the button/html code but I couldn't not find for the life of me how to have the html code appear on the side bar as a test...well - I struck gold when I found this site...it's laid out so easily! Have fun...http://www.calamityanne.com/2011/01/how-to-make-blog-button-with-text-code.html

  23. Awesome shot! The blue pool behind the bird is beautiful! You must have a long lens to get this closeup view. Thanks for hosting such a fun linkup!

    1. Thanks Sharon, actually not so much a long lens more than I was just pretty darn close. It was my Tamron 18-270mm. It's my "go to" lens and the one that is on my Canon 99.9% of the time.

    2. I am looking to get a similar focal length lens like that - do you love the Tamron? Wasn't sure if I should look into other brands or go with Canon.

    3. Diane, I have to say I love my Tamron. I also have a 50mm with 1.4 aperature. Have to tell ya, I LIVE with my Tamron and don't use my 50mm much at all. Whenever I travel, I only bring my Tamron. My next purchase will be a macro tho.

  25. Kath, sorry for the late comment but I literally posted my entry and ran out the door to our Miata club run. I am in love with this photo. I haven't even read through your comments, so if I am repeating what has already been said by someone else, I apologize.

I love the shiny blue in the foreground which almost looks like water--even the pigeon's tail is reflected in it. Of course I already know you are a shallow girl (depth of field-wise I mean, not shallow as in mean, etc.) and I love how you shot from the pigeon's point of view. I hope he spared your camera if he took flight.

    1. I DO like the shallow DOF don't I??!?!? lol. Very observant of you! And actually, that IS water in the foreground. The hotel we stayed at had a rooftop infinity edge pool that was amaaaaazingly awesome! I dream of going back and conversing with that pigeon again (not really.....I just wanna go back!).

  26. I think pigeons are flying rats where ever you go...theyre just a bit above the food chain when photographed in Spain!! Love it Kathy

  27. As always, you've left me laughing again from your way with words! Ahhh... those elite personalities of those living in Europe! My boys were five and three when we vaca'd in Portugal. How they loved to make the pigeons suddenly swish up into the air when their little legs took to running towards them! I also remember an older woman turning, with a scowl on her face, to reprimand my boys for frightening them. Apparently honored and protected birds!

    1. Kadee, we were in Barcelona the first time when Thing #3 was in kindergarten. She decided she wanted to "feed" the pigeons in one of the squares. OMG. Let me just say there wasn't enough hand sanitizer in all of Barcelona that I felt would adequately cleanse her once she was done, haha.

  28. What an amazing view! I think the pigeon would even be excellent company too.

  29. Oooh rats with wings! LOL thats what we call them too! Dirty little birdies. But sometimes very cute. When my son was in the hospital in May, we were sitting in a park by the hospital in NYC, and some pigeons were there cooing at us. I couldn't help but think how cute they were for a few minutes... it comforted me. :) Beautiful picture of course as always!
