The streets they shine like silver...

"Philly at Dusk"
Broad Street
Philadelphia, PA

SOMETIMES being in a rush helps.  SOMETIMES the circumstances are just right.  SOMETIMES you just have to ignore the family unit when they are being swept away in the crowd and you want to take a photo.  SOMETIMES it takes no talent beyond simply jumping up on the top step and sticking your camera above the throng of people exiting the Academy of Music after seeing "Les Mis".  SOMETIMES, it just all works because..."the city streets they shine like silver".   Okay, maybe they just glowed a bit.

  4. I knew that was from the steps of the Academy before I read the words! I just LOVE that part of town - the hustle and bustle and energy! Not to mention the Academy is one of my most favorite places - ever!

  15. Those times when my 1st shot (of a series of 50), or the shot I spent only a nano second taking, or the shot that I just flipped out my LCD screen without looking through the viewfinder and clicked without focusing or playing with any settings, ends up being "the" shot. Those are the times I wonder about my photographic skills! Great shot!!

  17. Beautiful! And what you say is sooo true.
"Where's Mom? Oh she stopped to take a photo, she'll find us."
I have given up trying to get my husband to stop or slow down on car trips. I shoot from what it hopefully a clean window and then search the far distance of the shot to see if there is anything of interest

    Love the city scene.

  20. I think I would have gone for a square composition on this one, but other than that, this is just gorgeous. I love all the vertical lines and the eye-popping clock!

    1. Interesting, thank you for sharing your perspective. I guess what drew me to the scene, aside from the colors, was the vertical nature of a cityscape...hence the portrait orientation. Thank you for taking the time to comment :)

  24. you are singing to the choir about the need to stop and take a shot even at the risk of losing your company in the moving crowd. Great dusk shot, and I agree with Maddy - you can feel the electricity of the city.

  26. I've half a mind to email Philadelphia's Council ( or whatever is your equivalent of) and speak to the tourism department about the brilliant work a certain person is doing to promote her city. I love the feel of this shot and the fact that you were able to take it 'in a rush'.

  27. Yum. Love it. I recently spoke with a photographer who told me he often did that in crowded situtions-I'm not sure about the jumping on a step, but the holding the camera high and just snapping. In fact on TV I saw a photog doing that the other day after the Pats game trying to get a snap of Tom Brady.
Les Mis, my fave show ever. I saw it at the Walnut-and even with those squishy seats with no leg room, sat riveted throughout. Happy day-and print this one, it's fantastic.

  33. Ah, come on now...you're making me homesick for Philly. My hubby and I moved to the Philly area when we first were married. I worked downtown and lived in King of Prussia. We still lie in bed at night and talk about the things we miss there. The philly pretzels, Nifty Fifties, Rita's Water Ice, REAL cheese steaks (anyone can call it a philly cheese steak, but if you're not buying it in Philly, it AIN'T a cheese steak!) Thanks for sharing the beautiful photo! We loved Philly, but I must say, we enjoy the weather more here in Florida. I found your blog through the blog party. :)
