The greatest suffering...

"Unwanted"
Cannes, France

"There is much suffering in the world - physical, material, mental.
The suffering of some can be blamed on the greed of others.
The material and physical suffering is suffering from
hunger, from homelessness, from all kinds of diseases.

But the greatest suffering is being lonely, feeling unloved, having no one.
I have come more and more to realize that is is being unwanted
that is the worst disease that any human being can ever experience."

--Mother Theresa

I think I made those with me a bit uncomfortable when I stopped to take a photo of this man.  But I found the image so moving.  It was a reminder that in the midst of great wealth and extravagance,  there is also great poverty and suffering.

  1. Yes it is a very powerful reminder to see this sort of loneliness, and it is more and more prevalent wherever we go. Certainly saw alot of this in Chicago on my Christmas trip. Hard to imagine. Good post Kathy

  2. all i can think to write is BRAVO, what a powerful image!! so much saddness, poverty, suffering, loneliness.....i can't help but think how much good could have been done with all the $$ we spent on the inauguration. so much need in this country right now, some much need right here at the jersey shore. think of all the hungry people that could have been fed with just the food. saddness overload....and we just don't have a say!!!

  3. I thank you for your artistry and words on this subject. Today you have reached people through your photography to stop and think of others. And to remind us to lend a hand in this world. Beautiful post!

  4. A sad subject to be sure and one that touches my heart deeply. When I was a visiting Nurse I saw so much poverty in the rural areas of our country when there is no need for it when there is a government spending millions to support past presidents and other elected officials. I think it's time for them to get off the payroll and find a job like we all have to and lend a hand to those who are down and out with that money. Oppps, I am up on the soap box....................

  5. Wow Kathy! Such a poignant post. Mother Theresa words are so true. Lonely. Just the word itself is sad. Life is hard and we have so much to be thankful for. See, even you have more shoes than me. (hug) We are so blessed each time we count that we are.

  8. What a powerful photo...it says so much with so little. And the Mother Theresa quote speaks the truth very eloquently, as she was always able to do.

  11. I love that quote of hers, it's so true. People are becoming and feeling unwanted because we fail to accept them the way they are. Very moving photo, so many stories...

  15. I get that people felt uncomfortable while you were taking that photo but I completely commend you for doing so - it's most likely that whoever saw this image, even without the camera lens were uncomfortable, but you took this a step further, and in your usual clever and clear way - not to glorify, but just for the message. I'm not Catholic but oh my goodness, that Mother Theresa was so very wise and so worldly - imagine just spending a few hours with her - what a testament. Thanks, Renee.
