53 is GRRRRRREAT...

"53rd Birthday"
(self portrait project 44/52)
(**taken with i-phone...not a big fan of i-phoneography quality--- yet)

Sooooo, it's taken me about a week to settle into the fact that I turned 53.  I really wish I could be one of those people who just doesn't care about age. That it's JUST a number.  True, but I prefer other numbers like "50% off". Or that it's okay because the alternative is worse. Maybe, but MY alternative is DENIAL, and it's a lovely place (if you want to visit, let me know and I'll give you the password).  Or that one must surrender, resistance is futile.  Oh yeah?  I have not yet begun to fight.  Actuuuuuually the drawer full of moisturizers kinda belies that fact....but I plan to fight the GOOD fight, ad nauseum, one retiin-a and glycolic acid product at a time.

Yes, I realize this is a problem.  Yes, I have my issues.  Yes, vanity is obviously my middle name.  Week's like this, it's kinda hard for me to think of anything marvy about myself when I have visions of hover-rounds and support hose dancing in my head.  But, I saw Stasha's topic for her Monday Listicles and thought...hmmmm, do ya think anyone will know that I'm lying?

10 Reasons Why I'm Grrrrrrrrreat

1.  I think it's GRRRRREAT overcoming a challenge.  Hence, why I'm tackling this list.

2.  I think it's GRRRRREAT that I fall in the same category as fine wine and aged cheese.  As long as I don't smell like aged cheese.  I will conveniently ignore the fact that compost falls into this area too. Isn't THAT GRRRREAT??!!??

3.  I think it's GRRRRREAT that when I go to the gym I can kick a 52 year old's butt...easily.  On a good day?  Maybe even a 50 year old's.

4.  I think it's GRRRRREAT that I can laugh at myself.

5.  I think it's even GRRRRREATER that I can laugh at OTHER people too :)

6.  You know what's GRRRREAT about laughing at other people?  It makes you feel like you are an immature teenager.  Which is kinda GRRRRREAT when you are 50 freakin' 3.

7.  I think it's GRRRREAT that Liam Neeson can have an affair with a younger woman and I could still qualify!!!!  Call me :)

8.  I think it's GRRRREAT that Barbie and I are the same age.  Yet she is full of plastic, and I am proud to say I'm not.

9.  I think it's GRRRREAT that I have a pretty good sense of humor.  But it's even GRRRREATER that the Better Half has a much better one...so he can put up with  me (just kidding 'bout the whole Liam Neeson thingy honey).

10.  I think it's GRRRRREAT that I'm a woman.  'Cause women live longer.  So I can look  forward to getting reaaaaaally old.  Just GRRRREAT.

The good news is, when I'm 63 I will probably look back at this and say "53 sure was a GRRRREAT year!!!"  Because when it comes right down to it...I am grateful that I am here.

Happy Monday...

  4. 53, honey, never ever would have guessed that!! I think you should petition stores to give you a discount for every year you are old - that way each birthday gets you a better discount! Hope you had a good b-day!!

  11. Ooooh I might want to play this, so I'm not going to read yours until I write mine or decide that I'm not. So you're a SAG??? Cool beans. My birthday is in ten days. Not that I'm counting down. I just looked down at the calendar and its the 3rd so it was easy enough to subtract 3 from 13. I and you look beatimous for 53. Age and nothin but a number. You make sure you tell me that in 10 days and I'll probably say "whatever" like you just did. ;-)

  14. I am thinking that this is the most "GREAT" list I have read.. I just turned 50 and I can't even run down 50 yards without gasping for air so I think you are my hero. But I am still not taking up running. Happy Birthday my friend. I have to say YOU LOOK FABULOUS.

  16. Well, I guess I'm one of those just a number people...so far! And yes you do have a grrreat sense of humor, but I can't imagine why you would need support hose (I have seen all your selfies) - that kinda depresses me, cause that would mean I need support armor!! lol

  27. Age is subjective at whatever stage we are! As one of the wonderful (if somewhat vain and superficial) ladies says on this fun clip: "I'm between 50 and death"! Apparently, when you get to 90, you can start to 'boast' again!!!

  28. I have a couple of months before I reach the big 53 -- but I don't stress about those birthdays anymore.

At some point, I stopped worrying about wrinkles and gray hair, because there's nothing one can really do about it. Especially if you were not all that great about taking care of your skin and hair in your youth (raising hand.)

Now, it's mostly about experiences I want to have before I get too old to have them. To derive something good from each day, if I can. Because in the end, no one will remember the pretty face, but rather the good deeds you've done or the life you've enjoyed.

Happy Birthday, dear. And you are a pretty lady. Inside and out. :)

  29. Great list!!! It's always great when you can laugh at other people! and kick a 52 year old's butt at the gym! Happy Birthday!

  30. Happy Birthday! Who cares what numbers say! The only thing that matters is how young you feel and you sure look like you're 35! :)

  31. You are a truly inspiring 53-year-old. I'm not too far behind you at 48 (and with a kindergartener!). And you should be damn proud of not being pumped with plastic like Barbie!!

  33. I am a few days late but better late than never to wish you a Happy Birthday. I love your list and your sense of humour about this age thing. I turn 57 (ugh) today and I can't believe that! My brain revolts about that! Maybe when I am 90 I might feel the age I turned today! I think it is a good thing to not feel the number! I am sure if I did, I'd be that age. Hope you had a wonderful birthday and it leads into your best year yet!

  34. you dont look 53 at all!

  36. I don't care that you disabled comments on the one post that spoke to my heart--I will find a way to tell you that you are in (and have been in) my thoughts and prayers. So very sorry for your loss and cannot even imagine. I do know the emptiness I feel at the loss of my father and know it never gets easier. God bless you. Don't stay away too long because I tend to think that your blogging helps both you and your followers.

  37. I think that your last comment is GRrrreat, the one about being 63... because I am, and I was your age only last year. It was the comment that I was going to make here, and what you said is soooooo true.... Enjoy this time!
