Who says you can't go home?...

When it comes to most things that I encounter on a daily basis, I have absolutely no problem taking photos. Sometimes  often ad nauseum.  However, I have a habit of neglecting "James Dean" when BIG stuff happens.  And when I say BIG stuff, I mean the special occassions that mark family life.  Times where I really put in the effort and would probably appreciate having some photos to look back upon.  But as often happens when engrossed in photography, you tend to spend more time with the camera than the loved ones in your presence.  My Things and loved ones don't have the opportunity to get together all that often.  So "James Dean" gets put on the back burner at those times.  If for no other reason than to prove to my Things that "James" isn't my favorite family member after all.

Quick recap to explain the following photos.  I grew up outside of Philly, but lived away from the area for 30 years.  The Better Half acquiesced a couple of years ago, and we moved back to my hometown. Well...not actuuuuuually MY hometown.  The one next door.  Enemy territory and the rival high school I grew up disliking. Karma, karma, karma...Thing #3 now attends the high school that was MY high school's rival.  Thanksgiving morning the two schools have their traditional Thanksgiving Homecoming football game.  This year, it was at MY high school.  I hadn't been back on the premises since 1977, when I graduated in the pouring rain on that very football field.  As luck would have it, this year Thing #3 was part of a group that sang the national anthem pre-game.  So I HAD to go, no excuses.  I do believe I experienced literally stepping into a time warp.  Nothing had changed.  Well, except the beautiful weather.  It was always nasty cold when I was a student attending these games.  And....my outfit.  Last time I was at a game I was wearing gold lame' and white boots as part of the marching band.  This time, I was still wearing boots (brown) but alas no gold lame'.

I guess we're Hatters now.  First time I ever watched a game from this side of the field.

Never thought I'd be at MY high school with my Things in hand.  Ahem, Thing #3 is
getting a little sensitive about appearing in my blog.  Not that she ever LOOKS at my
blog.  Thing #1 could care less.  And Thing #2 was home looking after the turkey in the oven so the
house didn't burn down in my absence.

The Upper Moreland Bears won.  Now THAT was a  new experience too!!!!  I might have been on the Hatboro side of the field, but my heart will always be a Golden Bear.

And just a few more "this and that" Thanksgiving photos.  Because I only play "Martha Stewart" twice a year (Thanksgiving and Christmas)...so I like to have proof.

No photos of my family, you'll just have to trust me that they really do exist.  We were just having too much fun to stop and take photos.  I guess that is what happens when you get caught up on the moment.  You don't stop to preserve it.  And that is just fine.  But there IS one photo that pretty much sums up how we were all feeling by the end of the day...

"I Can't Believe I Ate the Whole Thing"

I hope you all were able to celebrate Thanksgiving in a way that truly encompasses what the holiday means to you and yours.  Who says you can't go home?  Go Bears!  Stomp those Hatters!  (Sorry Thing #3 your team pretty much stinks this year, but your voice was beauuuuutiful)  Boo-yah.

  2. I too, neglect the camera on holiday's it seems. I carried it with me, but alas - it stayed in it's bag never to see the light of day other than the few turkey shots I got of the smoked turkey Dream Boy created earlier at our own home.
Lovely post & great series of shots!

  3. Great set of shots and narrative to walk us through your holiday! I was writing last night, and my husband was like...are you writing about me?? And I was all...um, no, cause you don't like being on my blog very much...and he just said, yeah, thanks! It's a funny balance to strike - being IN the moment, behind the camera and also IN some of the photos. I like how other pieces of the scene (non face pieces....hands, decor) can help tell the story. Throw in an occasional face and it's all good! Also, I love your festive header!

  4. Kathy, I parallell your life in some aspects. Graduated from UM, moved away for 16 years and my kids went to HH our rival. That's all on this blog we have in common. Your pictures are wonderful and I've never seen anyone decorate like you do. It must be nice to exceed expectations in most every category!
