"I say Nosegay...

(day #5 of the 5 day/5 photos/5 stories challenge)

"The Nosegay"
Thing #3

Wrist corsages were sooooo yesterday, this prom season in our neck of the woods.   All the girls were carrying their flowers, not wearing them.

Moi:  I love how everyone has a nosegay this year!

Thing #3:  A WHAT??!!??

Moi:  A nosegay!

Thing #3:  Don't EVER call it that again!!!!!!!!!

I guess nosegays have gone the way of powder blue tuxes, ruffled shirts, and cummerbunds.   I was informed they are now called "small hand held flower bouquets".   Sounds like a NOSEGAY to moi!

Here's where I "link up" today

  1. LOL! I like the much shorter and simpler "nosegay" - ten times easier than saying whatever the other was. Great photo!

    Stopping by from image-in-ing ;)

  3. Actually, I have not heard of that expression "nosegay". I had no idea until now. I was never a fan of the pinned corsages and when our girls were teens I thought the wristlet corsages were great. I think handheld flowers are the best way to go, especially if you plan to preserve the flowers after the dance. But, what's a girl to do with it while she dances? I guess put it down, but then someone else can walk away with it and you know that's bound to happen from time-to-time. Oh well...nice photo op & fun memories for years to come. Have a fototastic day. Happy #WW

  5. Nosegay.
Now THERE'S a word you don't hear every day.

It's been funny to see how our language evolves... the words that fall into and out of favor, or whose meanings change. I still remember my grandmother prancing out from her room in colorful pajamas and saying, "Don't these make me look gay?"
I didn't explain what "gay" had come to mean!

Thanks for sharing this great photo at http://image-in-ing.blogspot.com/2015/06/nesting.html

  7. Well, I hope those "small hand held flower bouguets" make their noses gay when they sniff them. You know, hand held might not be all that bad...........it does give them something to hold onto and keep track of. Could be a life saver. I'm just sayin'...............

  8. Well, I guess I am still living in the time of nosegays, didn't know that had been updated to that elongated term. Sounds like it would be rather cumnberbuns, oh sorry, cumbersome.

  9. lol I would still refer to it as a nosegay.

  10. Oh, when I was at the florist for prom ordering they called it a tussie-mussie. I gave a blank stare and she said "nose gay"

    1. Becky, out of curiosity I googled synonyms for "nosegay" and "tussie-mussie" came up....I can't even imagine HOW that name even applies to a hand held gathering of flowers! haha.

  19. Well, wiki defines nosegay: noun
a small bunch of flowers, typically one that is sweet-scented.
    Love this!

  20. I would have used the term nosegay...and in fact DID just recently when discussing bridal bouquets and brides maids carrying "nosegays". Nobody said anything although I have been told to never EVER say 'thongs' for flip flops again, lol. I may have been the only one who knew what I was talking about, but that is not uncommon in my household.
